Genomic Medicine Implementation: The Personalized Medicine Program

As part of the University of Florida (UF) Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the UF Health Personalized Medicine Program partners with health professionals and patients at UF Health and across the state to develop, implement, study and refine methods that allow genetic information to be used as a routine part of patient care. Their initial focus was on pharmacogenetics.

Project Goals

  • Partner with health professionals and patients at UF Health and across the state to develop, implement, study and refine methods that allow genetic information to be used as a routine part of patient care.
  • Engage in expansion to Private and Community-based Practices in Florida.
  • Develop programs in Genomic Medicine Education.

Program Description

The program was led by faculty from the UF College of Pharmacy and brought together a large multidisciplinary team that provided the complementary clinical, informatics, laboratory medicine, and administrative expertise required to implement genomic medicine.

Created in June 2011 under the leadership of Julie A. Johnson, Pharm.D., the program dedicated its first year to developing the complex clinical, laboratory and information flows required for UF Health to systematically implement genomic medicine. The program’s first clinical implementation launched in June 2012, and they continued to build on this infrastructure through multi-faceted patient care, education and research initiatives.

Expansion to Private and Community-based Practices in Florida

The UF Health program implemented and assessed the ability to implement genomic medicine outside of a tertiary care Academic Medical Center at diverse health settings outside of the UF Health system.

UF Health Pathology Laboratories, which developed the infrastructure to process the blood samples from patients, offered its services and expertise for the expansion at UF Health and to external partners.

Development of Education Programs

To complement its clinical implementations, the program offered a variety of innovative educational programs to prepare health-care professionals, health sciences students and patients for a future in which genomic medicine is commonplace.
